Hair cells are specialized sensory epithelial cells found in the inner ear (Figure1a). Inmammals, the inner ear contains the coiled cochlea as well as the vestibular apparatus, which includes two otolith organs (the utricle and the saccule) and three semicircular canals. The cochlea and the components of the vestibular apparatus are interconnected by fluid-filled tubes that are circular and contorted and form a labyrinth. At certain places within the tubes are found specialized areas that house the sensory cells (hair cells), cells that surround and support them (supporting cells) and nerves that innervate them. These regions are called the crista ampullaris (Figure 1b) in the case of the semicircular canals, the otolithic macula (Figure 1c) in the case of the otolith organs, and the organ ofCorti (Figure 1d) in the case of the cochlea.
